How does Ask-A-Scientist work?

Questions are sent to Orlando Science Center and screened for appropriateness. Once approved, questions are then forwarded to the Florida Academy of Sciences for review and onto a scientist.

What types of questions are appropriate?

Your question should concern science. We will not answer questions related to medical diagnoses for people or pets, questions that can be answered by basic references such as encyclopedias or dictionaries, or help in developing ideas for science projects. We ask that you be as specific as possible with your question and that it relates to science.

What are the types of questions we recieve?

Here are some examples:

  • I found what we think is a Magledon tooth. It’s about the size of my palm. How do I see how much this is worth?
  • How close would Mars have to be to the earth to appear as big as the moon?
  • How can phosphorus, which is found as a natural element, be present in Florida’s water?
  • How does an electric guitar amplifier work?

How do I ask a question?

Simply e-mail your question to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We ask that you also provide either your grade level or age so that we can provide an appropriate response to your question. Please make sure you have a valid e-mail address!

How is my question answered?

We ask that scientists participating in the Ask-A-Scientist program respond to questions that we select. Please be aware that due to the number of requests we receive, it is not possible for all questions to be answered.
