Close to 4,000 Experience Science Center for Only $5 Thanks to the Walmart Foundation

Sunday, August 29, 2010, the Orlando Science Center in a partnership with the Walmart Foundation, celebrated  “Walmart $5 Day” at the center. Guests enjoyed the many exhibits, films and live shows at the Orlando Science Center on Sunday for $5 per person, thanks to the Walmart Foundation.

The Orlando Science Center was filled with over 3900 people – many experiencing the Orlando Science Center for the first time. It was a day full of discovery as guests explored hands-on exhibits and displays in exhibits like KidsTown, Science Park, DinoDigs and Frogs. Giant screen films like Amazon, Sharks and Ultimate Wave: Tahiti were also available for viewing in the Dr. Philips CineDome.

More than 1,700 Running to Support the Orlando Science Center

Saturday, August 14 kicked off Track Shack’s annual Grand Prix series with the Celebration of Running 5K at the Orlando Science Center in Loch Haven Park. What you may not know is proceeds from this event benefit the Orlando Science Center and help us promote science education and provide engaging experiences for all ages in the community.

More than 1,700 runners and walkers enjoyed the scenic route through the lovely neighborhoods surrounding Loch Haven Park. Proceeds benefit the Orlando Science Center through the Track Shack Foundation and will be used to promote science education and provide engaging experiences for all ages in the community.

Presented by Florida Hospital and the Track Shack Foundation, the Annual Celebration of Running 5K is the launch of a month long celebration (and sale) at the Track Shack, which commemorates 32 years of business, and kicks off the famous Grand Prix series of races.

Run of Live Show Exploring Extreme Temps Extended by Popular Demand

Originally, this show was wrapping up at the end of July, but thanks to popular demand, Sub-Zero has been extended for several weeks. During this show, the “King of Cool, the Emperor of Ice, the Master Blaster of Disaster,” Jimmy “J-Rex” Waldron explores the science of things that freeze AND go bang!

So you’ve just seen The Ultimate Wave Tahiti at the Orlando Science Center and now you want to go surf the big waves of Tahiti. Assuming you know how to surf (not an easy task!), you’ll probably want to learn the language of Tahiti. Well, here are some interesting facts about the Tahitian Language, or “Reo Tahiti.” Get out your pen and paper!

The Tahitian Language does not contain a “B,” even though one of the most famous islands in Tahiti is “Bora Bora.” This is because when early visitors heard of the island, they mistook “Pora Pora” for “Bora Bora.”

Another interesting fact about the Tahitian Language is that their alphabet includes what is called a “glottal stop,” or ‘eta. To English speakers, this would appear to be an apostrophe, but it is in fact a consonant. For example, the word for fish in Tahitian is i'a.

Now let’s say you’ve mastered all of the words in Tahitian. Something you’d have to keep in mind is the word order. In English, our general sentence structure is Subject Verb Object (SVO). For example, “I ate cake.” “I” is the subject, “ate” is the verb, and “cake” is the object. In the Tahitian Language, the order is “Verb Subject Object.” So a proper sentence in Tahiti would be “Ate I cake!”
